L’hiver et ses galères : affronter les intempéries de l'hiver à vélo

Winter and its challenges: facing the winter weather by bike

Winter roads can be unforgiving, with rain, ice, snow, and mud, but that doesn't mean you have to give up your passion for cycling. With the right precautions, it's entirely possible to keep pedaling no matter the season.

When cycling, biting winds can make your ride difficult. In this case, one of the keys to dealing with these conditions is to protect your head. Layer up to keep you warm and dry.
The ideal cycling gear to combat the cold includes a breathable but insulating vest and pants, base layers suitable for freezing temperatures, a hat to wear under your helmet, warm gloves, thick socks, and even heated insoles for optimal comfort.

How to avoid falls?
One of the first steps to take to ensure your safety when cycling in winter is to choose tires appropriate for the season. Winter tires, just like those for cars, provide better grip and greater durability on slippery roads. Once you get home, be sure to store your bike in a covered shelter, such as a garage or a dedicated area, to protect it from the elements.
Furthermore, rain is common in Belgium. This is even more problematic in winter when temperatures drop and create ice. Roads become slippery, increasing the risk of falls. To prevent these accidents, caution is essential. Adjust your speed, increase braking distances, and avoid slippery surfaces such as manhole covers and tram tracks.
Finally, be sure to wear reflective clothing and ensure your bike is equipped with adequate lights for optimal visibility in the dark. When it comes to your safety, no precaution is too much.
With the right equipment and a generous dose of caution, there's no excuse not to enjoy your bike this winter. He's just waiting for you to get back on the road.
